Centre for Nordic Studies
Summer SchooL 2009

 

Interested in finding out more about Orkney and Shetland? Why not join our expert lecturers and guides for a summer school? You can study the whole programme or pick and mix from the programme. Why not combine both Orkney and Shetland based schools for a two centre holiday?

 

This year we are offering the following programme of four summer schools

Field trip:  Broch of Gurness and Brough of Birsay     

Evening:  music session

 

Thursday 11th June

Lecture: History of Orkney                                                  

Field trip:  Italian Chapel, Scapa Flow etc                          

 

Friday 12th June

Lecture:  Orkney Folklore and Literature                             

Field trip:  Corrigall and Kirbister Farm Museums               

 

Monday 15th June

Lecture: Orkney’s Archaeological Heritage                         

Field trip:  Kirkwall walking Tour                                          

 

Tuesday 16th June

Lecture:  Orkney’s Tongue                                                  

Field trip:  Maes Howe, Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae

         

 

Title:              Orkney Writers and Landscape Summer School

 

Venue:   Orkney  College                         Date: 6th to 10th July

Lecture: Shetland’s Archaeological Heritage                         

Field trip:  Scatness, and Jarlshof

Lecture:  Shetland’s Tongue                                                 

Field trip:  Shetland Museum tour + Lerwick Walking Tour (Lodberries, Fort Charlotte, Islesburgh Exhibition etc)

Lecture:  Music Workshop                                                  

Field trip:  Mousa

Friday 17th July

Lecture:  Modern Shetland poetry                                         

Field trip:  Mousa
