Dating from 1654, the map shown to the right is one of the earliest representations of the Orkney Islands.

Engraved by Johan Blaeu, the map takes its information from an earlier source - an outline of the islands prepared in 1636 by Henricus Hondius, a Dutch publisher and cartographer who lived between 1597 and 1651.
