  Jo Ben's 1529 "Descriptions of Orkney"

WESTRAY

Westray, as it were said, the west island, is the most fertile of any of the Orkney islands and noble families have settled there, and there is a most excellent fortress or castle*, notwithstanding that it is not yet completed.

In times past the farmers living here, going out to fight with the Hibernians, the Lewismen, inthe vernacular, and turning and fleeing the invaders all perished together.

One man, nevertheless, fought more bravely and fiercely after the others were slain; having his hamstrings cut, he, however, was brought to his knees, when still engaged in the contest.

In this island there is a high mountain.

* - probably Noltland Castle.
