Jo Ben's 1529 "Descriptions of Orkney"

SHAPINSHAY

Shapinshay [Schapinschaw], called the Shipping Isle; the inhabitants are very ignorant; they worship the fairie and other abominable [wicked] things.

In length the island is six miles, in breadth two.

At that place other seas flow where a passage opens to Kirkvallia. [Kirkwall]
