Jo Ben's 1529 "Descriptions of Orkney"

BIRSA

Birsa is denominated the barony, in which is an excellent palace where in times past the King of Orkney reigned; but when Julius Caesar [was] governing the whole world, by some means conveyed the king to Rome, and afterwards Orkney was subject to the Romans, as the inscription on a stone testifies the name of the King was Gavus [Ganus].*

* - what the author is referring to here is unclear, as is the identity of his King Gavus.
