Record-breaking visitor numbers at Orkney heritage sites
Story dated: March 13, 2007

Picture Sigurd TowrieHeritage sites in Orkney are celebrating record-breaking visitor numbers.

The overall visitor figures for Orkney’s ticketed Historic Scotland attractions rose from 113,602 last year to a projected 117,483 for 2006-07.

This was due to a 19 per cent rise in visitors to Maeshowe (from 20,763 to 24,708), an 18 per cent rise at the Broch of Gurness (9,666 to 11,394), an eight per cent rise at the Brough of Birsay (5,441 to 5,872) and a 54 per cent increase at Hackness Martello Tower and Battery (1,229 to 1,887).

There was a four per cent drop in numbers visiting Skara Brae (67,011 to 64,529) and the Bishop’s Palace and Earl’s Palace in Kirkwall (9,519 to 9,093).
