Outrage as vandals hit Skara Brae
By Sigurd Towrie
Story dated: August 14, 2007

Vandals have targetted the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae in Sandwick.

House One at the site, one of the best preserved, was daubed with graffitti on Monday night - possibly, going by one of the markings, by someone who spent the night in the structure.

The culprit(s) - who are thought to be visitors to Orkney - used black marker pen to deface two stones; one on the house's dresser and the other on a bed corner-post.

The mindless attack is made all the more galling by the fact that it took place in the same week that Skara Brae was held up in the national and international media as a yardstick by which to measure the significance of Orkney's archaeology.

Police are seeking the public's assistance in finding the culprits, and particularly want to trace a silver Hyundai, registration LT56 CZJ.

Anyone with information should call Kirkwall Police Station on 872241, or the confidential line on 870999.
