Historic Scotland rangers prepare for 2007
Historic Scotland’s Orkney Ranger Service organised walks, talks and other activities for more than 2,000 people in the past year.
The rangers are hoping the year ahead will prove just as successful and plan to continue the walks when the new season starts at Easter.
They will use the annual Historic Scotland Free Weekend, on 21 and 22 April, to invite hoteliers and bed and breakfast owners along to experience the walks for themselves.
Ranger Elaine Clarke said: ‘We were delighted the guided walks were so popular last year and we hope to improve on that success this year.
"Visiting the Ring of Brodgar is a truly captivating experience, and the guided tours are a great opportunity for people to gain a real sense of understanding about the site. In inviting hoteliers and B&B owners along to try the walk for themselves we hope they will then recommend it to their guests.’
Other Orkney ranger events planned for 2007 include talks at the Cuween and Wideford Hill chambered cairns.
As well as the walks, the rangers, who are funded by Historic Scotland and SNH, did talks for 169 people. They also worked on a variety of other activities, such as school visits, involving more than 400 others.
