Rangers offer guided walks around Brodgar

Guided tours lead by Historic Scotland's expert guides are back by popular demand.

The Orkney World Heritage Site Ranger Service is offering free guided walks around the Ring of Brodgar, a stunning circle of upright standing stones dating to the Neolithic period, situated just five miles north-east of Stenness.

In 2007, nearly 1,700 visitors enjoyed tours from our Rangers Sandra Miller and Elaine Clarke, compared with 1,200 in 2006, and this year people of all ages will have the opportunity to attend walks every Thursday at 1pm.

On the tour, visitors will have the chance to uncover the history behind the people who created the Ring of Brodgar, the reasons for its creation and what it was used for.

Sandra Miller, Ranger at Historic Scotland, said: "'Visiting the Ring of Brodgar is a quite a special experience: the history of the site and its surroundings give it real atmosphere and the stories behind it really bring it to life. It's been so rewarding to see the growing popularity of our guided walks and we are looking forward to welcoming more people in 2008.'

No advance booking is required for these guided tours, although visitors are advised to wear appropriate outdoor clothing.

There are guided walks every Thursday  February to May, September to December, and every day during June, July and August.
