Orkney events for Archaeology Month 2007
Article date: Friday, September 7, 2007

Throughout September, as part of Scottish Archaeology Month, there are opportunities to hear, direct from the experts, all about the fascinating history of some of Orkney’s historical sites.

The Orkney programme kicks off today, Saturday, at Noltland Castle – a fine, ruined Z-plan tower, built between 1560 and 1563 but never completed.  Visitors are invited to drop in to join the World Heritage Site rangers anytime between 10.30am and 4.30pm to discover the story of this remarkable building.

On Friday, September 14, at 7.00pm, the focus will be on the German High Seas Fleet in Scapa Flow.

On Sunday, September 16, at 2.00pm, in the Earl’s Palace in Birsay, visitors can hear the colourful tale of the residence of Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney, which was constructed, around a courtyard, between 1569 and 1574.

And finally, on Saturday, 29 September, there’s an opportunity to enjoy a tour of The Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces in the centre of Kirkwall. The tour starts at Earl’s Palace at 2.00pm.
