Picture: Sigurd TowrieA new ‘virtual’ tour of Maeshowe at the winter solstice has been released by Historic Scotland.

The computer-generated animation was unveiled at a special reception in Kirkwall on Tuesday evening.

The virtual reproduction of Maeshowe has been created using 3D laser-scanning data collected to aid with the conservation and interpretation of the site through the Scottish Ten project – a collaboration between Historic Scotland, Glasgow School of Art and CyArk to document Scotland’s five UNESCO World Heritage Sites and five international sites using cutting-edge digital technologies.
